My current backup software (BackUp MyPC from Sonic Solutions/Roxio) is
not compatible with Vista. Are there good backup programs out there
that are compatible with Vista?

Hi Charlie,
Backup4all is Vista-compatible (http://www.backup4all.com/). I think
it is a good program but it also has some things that should be fixed:
a) Empty folders are not backed up. (There are cases where empty
folders are important even though they may not contain data all the
time.)
b) This may indeed be a very rare case but when the only changes that
occurred are deleted items, the backup catalog/index is not modified
and hence these changes are not incorporated in any way.
There is a trial available on the website.

P.S.: You asked for a data backup program, right? Creating a backup of
your complete operating system (HDD imaging) is a horse of a different
color and you would use different programs for that (e.g. Acronis
TrueImage 10). |

Just wanted to add some comments to the reported issues about Backup4all:
a) this is already being worked on, it will be included in one of the future
versions
b)i know we discussed with you about this, thing is that with
full/incremental/differential it doesn't make sense to create a new backup
only when files are deleted - but this will be recognized when a backup
where other changes are done is executed; also, for mirror backup there's a
"Remove excluded or deleted files from backup"

I agree the described case is more of an hypothetical scenario. I
could happen but is very unlikely because deletions are usually
accompanied by other operations as well . And in the case it would
happen I would not *lose* any files but just get some unwanted files
back that I would have to weed out again after the restore. No real
disaster ;-)
Mirror backups for backups are great for backing up on hard disk
drives, but for removable media like CDs or DVDs they are not very
well suited.

Agree with mirror backups on cd/dvd, if you have lots of documents you're
wasting time and money (maybe this will change with blu-ray discs).
