|
|
I use Retrospect Express v6.5 to backup my C drive to a WD Ext HD.
Approx once a month a do a total backup. I keep my last 2 backups and
delete the prior ones. I noticed when I delete the files I am not getting
that disk space back. I go into the program and delete all remainders of
the backup set, or in the programs language have it "forget" that backup
set, but still I don't get that space back. I'm down to 40GB of a 320GB HD.
What am I missing here?
Thanks!! |

To not waste anyones time. Now magically it appears I got the spack back. |
I plugged in another old Ext HD I happened to have an old backup set on.
It had only 4.83GB free and the backup was 4.24GB. I deleted it and did
not get the space back. But then something weird happened with MS Excel
which was also open, that program stopped responding so I went to delete
it in Ctrl+Alt+Del than the files which happened to be opened were read
only, then I was just gonna shut down my PC and reboot but Excel came
back up and I now had the disk space back on both ext HD. My main Ext HD
went from 39GB to 56GB and the other from 5GB to 10GB.
Sorry that was long winded.
But back to the original issue is there a proper way to delete backup
sets?
Also since I have your attention(assuming someone is reading this and
didn't get to confused yet) when I create a new Backup Set it asks me
"How much of this disk should be used?" and I can select a GB size or
Percent of HD. What is this for? I just select a GB a little above how
much I am backing up. Shouldn't the disk space be just what is needed and
why is it asking me, it should be able to figure it out?
Thanks! |

I just go to the restore option, hit next and it gives me a list of
available backups. I then select the backups I no longer need, and
hit the red X up at the top of the screen. Then I exit out and
Retrospect tells me it is reclaiming the disk space, and it does.
Re the % or GB to use for backup - this is to allow you to use that

Retrospect doesn't know if you want to use other applications on the

If you only use the disk for Retrospect backup, you can use all the

You should select a much greater GB for Retrospect backup than what
you are just backing up - the way you are doing it, you can only keep
one full backup on the disk and will overwrite it next time you do a
full backup - VERY BAD! I generally keep 10 to 15 backups, some full
and some incremental, and allow 100GB for Retrospect, with 100GB for
other applications and another 100GB for my image backups with Ghost
2003. Yes, I believe in belts and braces.

Wow you really lost me there! Each time I create a backup set it asks me
how much space to use so if I did a big amt each time I would run out of
disk space in no time. I only have 50GB available now("only" my first PC
had a 60MB HD).
For example I do my backups this way, each time I create a new backup set
and backup my entire C drive(which is only using 10GB, as I said above all
my audio/video is on my EXT HDs):
Backup Set A 013107
Backup Set B 022807
Backup Set C 033107 (after this backup completes I would delete Set A, so I
always keep the last two backup, you keep 10 I keep 2)
So am I just doing it different then you are and my way while maybe not the
most efficient way will work. I know it works b/c on my prior PC my HD went
and I used the lastest backup set to restore and it was 99.5% perfect.
I hope that made sense.

In the setup options, my Retrospect lists all available hard disks and
you can set which disks to use for backup and how much of each disk to
use, ie all for backup or leaving some spare for other applications.
Once set, it never asks again unless I want to change it by running
setup again. You are saying now that it asks every time you do a
backup - I don't know why it would do that - it should automatically
use only what it needs from the space allocated in setup, and when
that gets filled, it automatically starts deleting older backups to
make room for the new ones. Perhaps the reason it asks you every time
is that you have only allowed enough space on the disk for one backup,
and so when it comes to do another one, it needs to delete the older
one first?

My explanation above must be wrong as you have multiple backups - so
I'm sorry, I'm just as confused as you are, but you shouldn't have to
label and delete backup sets, Retrospect should do it automatically.
Well, mine does, but perhaps that's a difference in the way the
different versions work.

I am gonna bring this thread to an end as it's getting confusing. I was
going by your last post and looking at the program again I think I see
what I'm doing wrong or at least differently than designed.
Each time I do a backup I create a new backup set, it always brings up

and that's when it asks me for the disk space to use.
Instead all I need is one backup set, since I am only backing up 1 HD,
and I add to that each backup.
I don't like this as it seems to then do incremental backups, I just
tryed it and it selected 155mb to backup out of 7.2gb. Since I have don't
have a lot to backup and I do it every few months I prefer a complete
backup each time and I like the way it puts it into it's own directory.
But I now understand why it asks me each time(which is an
accomplishment).
BTW, what version are you using? I ask b/c I don't have the Setup option
you referred to so that's 2 differences between us(Setup and Restore red
X to delete). So I wonder if that is a newer feature or older feature
than mine(I'll guess newer). I also have an OEM version that came with my
Ext HD(if that matters).

Hi Louise,
It may depend on which version of Retrospect you are using.
Ringo's seems to work differently to mine.
I am using Retrospect Express HD V1.1 which came with my Maxtor 300GB
external HDD. In my case, Retrospect opens up with a window that has
a "backup now" option, an automatic backup option plus two buttons,
one called setup, one called restore. If I chose Setup, it lists what
HDD are available for backup, lets me designates which ones to use,
and then lets me designate to use all of each HDD for backup or to
reserve what I want for other applications. I have 100GB for
Retrospect backups and 200GB for other apps, which includes 100GB I
keep for Ghost image backups.

OK, I understand what you are doing now. I do a full backup then
automatic incremental's in the background every evening. That way I
don't even have to think about backups, it just happens. Then when
Retrospect starts overwriting old backups I do another full backup and
start over again. Doing it that way lets you restore the computer to
any specific date on which you took a backup, which has some
advantages for me as I experiment quite a bit and sometimes need to
backtrack. What you are doing isn't wrong - it's just another way
which is more convenient for what you want to do.
I also do manual full image backups using Ghost every time I have a
major change, so that takes care of my full backups if ever Retrospect
should kark it.
Nothing like belt and braces!

option, but probably accessed in a different way. I use Ghost 2003 as
I don't like the newer versions at all, and prefer to back out to DOS
to get my images.
Have fun.

I my case using Retrospect Express Backup v6.5 which came with my WD Ext HD
..
I click on the Backup icon. Then it brings up a window which has "Sources",
"Destination", "Selecting", "Preview" and "Options"
Click on "Destination" and in the next window click "Create new" to create
a new backup set.
A window welcoming you to the backup creation wizard comes up which you can
turn off so you might not see it.
In next window you select the Backup Media in which I select "Disk".
The next window you name the Backup Set and select which disk to use as
storage and then you're there, it adds to the bottom of that same window
the option to select how much disk space to use. It defaults to however
much space is available.
This is step by step for my version only and the way I do it only. Buyer
beware! |
