On the 'all about agile' blog, I've posted "Agile Principle #8:
Enough's enough!", which is all about applying the 80/20 rule in agile
development, or indeed any development...

I would be interested in your views?

The 80/20 rule does, indeed, have lots of applications, particularly for
process improvement. The article, though, seemed to emphasize applying
it to requirements in OOP-based agile processes and I think that is
largely irrelevant.

In modern commercial rapid product development environments the product
features are divided into three groups: essential, those which must be
present or the product will fail; desired, those that can provide
competitive advantage; and excitement, those that the customer does not
currently anticipate but can lead to market dominance. This analysis is
done by the Marketeers prior to any commitment to product development.

Since commercial products are largely driven by time-to-market, the
product requirements provided to the developers already represent the
Marketeers' analysis of the critical 20% of features that will result in
a successful product. Adding anything more would take longer and
jeopardize time-to-market, which can be enormously costly.

The article also mentioned MS Word as an example where most users only
used 8% of the features. I think that is something of a straw man
because MS Word was developed over a many years and a bunch of releases.
For each release there was some set of requirements that were deemed to
be the critical 20% _for that upgrade_. Thus the critical 20% is
relative to the product maturity and represents 20% of the /undeveloped/
features. For a product like MS Word the original critical 20% was
provided two decades ago and I'll bet each customer used 80% of those
features.

Ah, but which 8% for each user? There's the rub...

I make very heavy use of Word's drawing tools, whereas my brother barely
gets beyond the basic formatting features and, maybe, an occasional
simple table.

Then too, you don't gain market share by serving up only the features
your existing customer base uses, or even just the features they've
asked for. You have to stay ahead of shose curves. (As you said, with
each release, new features were added, they didn't start out with a
92% surplus of features.)
